Alongside the diabetes basics leaflet we developed, we also created a leaflet specifically for those living with Type 1 diabetes.
Type 1 leaflet – TIME
This Type 1 leaflet in public clinics should help those who need to manage insulin injections – it’s the second layer of foundational diabetes education. It is designed to work alongside the TEEL leaflet, with 4 simple things to remember: TIME.
The TIME leaflet was developed with Prof. Joel Dave, the head of endocrinology at Groote Schuur and UCT – based on his experience, and what patients and doctors need. It was edited in conjunction with Dr. Brendan Maughan-Brown, behavioural scientist, and endorsed by SEMDSA (the Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism in South Africa). It is supported by Abbott Diabetes Care.
2023 plans for the TIME leaflet
The two-sided A5 leaflet will be tested in primary, secondary and tertiary clinics in the Western Cape in early 2023. It is available in English, Afrikaans, isiXhosa, isiZulu and Setswana, and the goal is for people to take the leaflet home with them and keep it, because their doctor or nurse has written specific instructions on the back. It is specifically intended to be as practically helpful as possible.
