Diabetes and feet: callouses

Hi –

I have been diagnosed as diabetic six months ago. Fortunately for me, I am now managing to control my blood sugar levels (averaging between 5 and 6)
.

Unfortunately for me, I have this callous  under my little toe and it really hurts while walking. My doctor suggested surgery but I am worried because I have read a lot about diabetes and good food care.

What in case my foot does not heal? At the moment I manage to remove it myself but is this a long term solution?
Your professional advice would really be appreciated.
