Everything you need to know about the mySugr app

When we asked our South Africans with Diabetes community what their favourite diabetes app is, one answer came out loud and clear: mySugr! But why? Let’s find out.

If you’re looking for a way to get many of the perks of a CGM while using a glucometer, mySugr might be just what you’re looking for…

What is the mySugr app?

The mySugr app is a “comprehensive diabetes management companion”. That means it makes your life with diabetes easier. It’s designed to simplify the day-to-day tracking of blood sugar levels, activities, meals, and other things that might affect your blood sugar.

It helps you maintain better control of your diabetes while making the process fun and convenient. The app connects seamlessly with compatible glucometers and is widely used by people living with diabetes to organise their data and gain insights into their health.

There have been more than 6 million downloads of the mySugr app worldwide.

What makes it special?

Automatic personalised blood sugar logging is essentially the key feature of mySugr. Yes, automatic! When the mySugr app is wirelessly connected to your blood glucose meter, it automatically imports your results – which means no more manual logging!

This connection means you get a complete picture of all your diabetes information in one place, and learn how different lifestyle choices (food, activity, and stress) influence your blood sugar levels

Two versions of mySugr

There are two versions of mySugr: Basic and PRO. The mySugr Basic option is free for everyone, while the PRO option comes free if you use an Accu-Chek Instant glucometer (you can pay for it if you use a different kind of glucometer).

The Basic version of the mySugr app offers:

Glucose graphs that include glucose levels, insulin and carbs

Estimated HbA1c reading

Results sharing with your doctor and healthcare team

Basic challenges to reach your management goals

Which glucometers work with mySugr PRO?

If you’re using an Accu-Chek glucometer and connect it to the mySugr app, you will receive an upgrade to the PRO version at no cost.

This includes:

  • The Accu-Chek Guide Meter
  • The Accu-Chek Instant Meter
  • The Accu-Chek Performa Connect

If you’re using another glucometer brand, you’ll pay a monthly subscription to access the PRO version (R59.99 per month).

What does mySugr PRO offer?

mySugr PRO unlocks a bunch of useful features, including:

mySugr Bolus Calculator

Helps you calculate how much insulin to inject, taking into account what type of diabetes you have, what your target range for blood sugar is, what your insulin to carb ratio is, and how much active insulin you have on board. It’s like having a mathematician in your pocket! Here’s a detailed explanation.

Meal photo function

Adding photos of your meals with mySugr Meal Photos helps you learn how different foods impact your blood sugar levels and what adjustments you could make based on previous blood sugar readings. You can also log your food with tags, food type and descriptions, and it even lets you save meals on file so that you learn how they affect your blood sugar.

Blood sugar check reminders

For regular testing, when you choose them.

PDF mySugr Reports

mySugr Reports include data like estimated HbA1c or weekly blood sugar averages, which you can easily download, print, or send to your healthcare team before an appointment, or if you need advice.

Pump basal rate

If you’re on a pump, you’ll be able to insert your basal rate.
