Annual Diabetes Kids Camp

Read all about this year’s Diabetes SA Kids Camp below… Want to join in, or help out in some way? Please do!

Diabetes South Africa Pretoria branch will be hosting their annual kids camp this year on the weekend of 23-25 October 2015.  The camp will be held at the Wag ‘n Bietjie Camp Site just outside Elardus Park, Pretoria.  Approximately 50 children attend the camp each year. There is a R150-00 registration fee to ensure that  there are no last minute cancellations. There are many adults who are  responsible for supervision at the camp as well as a doctor and some nursing  sisters who also sleep over the camp. Everyone working at the camp for the  weekend are volunteers.  None of the adults or medical staff receive payment.

Every year the camp has its own unique camp theme. Activities are built around the theme for the year.  Kids will be doing the obstacle course and also have some fun in the swimming pool. They have a lot of fun during an arts and crafts session. Wag ‘n Bietjie also has an animal farm which the kids can visit. It is so nice for kids to attend the camp because they can share experiences and at the same time also have lots of fun with other kids living with diabetes. It is nice to see that you are not alone and it is great to make friends with other kids who have diabetes.

This year’s camp will once again be lots of fun. It is nice for parents to take a bit of time off for one weekend in the year not having to wake up during the night testing your child’s blood glucose or dealing with a high or low blood glucose level. To enable us to give the camp to the kids free of charge we are in very great need of sponsorships in terms for accommodation, prizes for the kids and items for their goodie bags they receive at the end of the camp.  We will be preparing our own meals this year to help cut costs. Anyone who can assist us by sponsoring food items such as bottled water, sugar free cold drinks, yoghurt, fruit, items for snacks will be much appreciated by all of us.  We would like to ensure that the kids all have a fun filled weekend with good diabetic friendly food.

Please support us to help make another dream camp come true. If you would like to register your child for the camp (ages 6 – 16 years) or would like to support us with a donation big or small, please contact Mariaan or Louise via email at
