Update on the Freedom Swim

If there’s one thing anyone who lives in Cape Town knows, it’s that the weather always wins! Please see below update about the Freedom Swim which was due to take place tomorrow, 27th April.

Dear Cape Town,

I type a little disappointed but actually not any less determined.

Please allow me to explain the heart of the situation?

Today a final decision was made based on water and swim conditions.

The Freedom Swim can no longer take place as planned on the 27th April 2017 due to these forecasted conditions and what they mean for the swim. Yet, to keep with the determination and drive to get awareness on our side for T1D, Dr Annabelle will still be swimming the cold, unpredictable waters on Wednesday 26th April but…toward Robben Island, staying over at the Island and coming back to Cape Town shores sometime on the 27th by ferry. Victory for this swim will still happen.

Due to the boatmen support going out into the water on this day too (time not confirmed yet) the Eden on The Bay Clubhouse will sadly now be closed for the 27th.

We genuinely do not want the value of the 2 hours we would have spent together to be any less than that – valuable. Therefore it has been decided that we will accept the change of course, but remain determined for a Cape Town get together another time in the year. We will not measure this as failure but a setback for now only. We choose to see what this can do positively for us.

There is a seriousness to make the T1D conversation in Cape Town strong, recognized and valuable.

Therefore, I am reaching out here, as we would have on the 27th to those in attendance….Please tell us what you would like to see in our T1D community here in Cape Town?

We can still prepare for and make the next arranged Cape Town get together valuable and great. We just want to hear directly from our fellow Cape Tonians.

If you are prepared to share your email address, our survey sheet will be sent to you and you can honestly feedback.

Should you wish to rather email me directly, you are most welcomed to at roxaxford@gmail.com . Your feedback will be appreciated.

The Argus has agreed to support the change of course by running a publication this weekend covering this story and highlighting the determination and victory for awareness of T1D even in these last minute challenges faced.

We may not have met, but we will, and I’m already so grateful to walk a road like this with the knowledge that many heroes exist. That Hero is YOU.

Our gratitude extends SO SO much to Dr. Annabelle and her amazing work.

Blessed Freedom Day to all this week, and here is to the Freedom Swim of the now 26th April 2017.

Thank you Kids Powered by Insulin!

My kind regards to all,

Mom of a T1D and co planner in the Freedom Swim.
