Sweet Life was so delighted to support the Mitchells Plein Diabetes Community Wellness Group at their recent seniors support camp. They are one of Diabetes SA‘s support groups, doing such wonderful work.

The Mitchells Plein Diabetes Community Wellness Group was established for those residents in the area diagnosed with diabetes. The Diabetes Wellness Community group is led by Mrs Carol Hendricks for over 21 years.

Supporting seniors with diabetes
The Wellness Group arranged some activity sessions for the Mitchells Plein Diabetes Seniors at the Voortrekker Recreational Park in Strand that took place from the 22nd to 30th July 2022. In total they had 60 seniors who participated. They engaged the seniors with some light exercise sessions, walks and games. They also arranged for health care professionals to give advice on management of diabetes.
The wellness group also invited a biokinetisist from the Medical Research Centre to come and work with the seniors. During the course of the camp, the event participants had their blood glucose and blood pressure monitored daily. The invitation was also extended to the Strand Community to come for free blood glucose and blood pressure testing during the duration of their stay.
Dress up celebration for the Mitchells Plein Diabetes Community Wellness Group
The seniors finished off the 8-day event in a fun and unique way by wearing “dress-up”.
The seniors showed a lot of creativity from wearing traditional African clothing to the South African flag.
Sweet Life is pleased to have supported this camp with copies of our Healthy Food Guide and budget for healthy food and snacks. They were also sponsored by Brookes Low-Cal juice, NOMU skinny hot chocolate and Gullon sugar-free biscuits.
For anyone who would like to get in touch to support the Mitchells Plein Diabetes Community Wellness Group in future, please contact Carol Hendricks.
