Let’s talk about CGM access for kids

We’re supporting SA Diabetes Advocacy in their petition to give CGM access to all kids under 18 with Type 1 diabetes. But why is CGM access for kids so important? Let’s talk about it.

CGM access for kids

Internationally, Continuous Glucose Monitors (CGM) are the standard of care, not just for children but for adults. In South Africa, many medical aids (not all – here’s the list) offer CGM of some description to their members with Type 1 diabetes. Children are prioritised, but that’s only for those who can afford medical aid. The other 85% of South Africans are given strips, if they’re lucky…

This needs to change. Numerous studies have shown that long-term, CGM reduces healthcare costs. Being able to see what your blood sugar is doing 24 hours a day enables tighter blood sugar control, leading to fewer long-term complications.

It’s the current cost that has been the issue. But SA Diabetes Advocacy believes it’s time for the National Department of Health to support children with Type 1 diabetes. “While we recognise the current urgent funding needs in the TB/HIV space,” they explain, “we also believe that ensuring access to essential care for people with Type 1 diabetes — particularly children — must be prioritised as well.”

That’s why they’ve started a petition to provide CGM access for kids – all kids – in South Africa under the age of 18 who are living with Type 1 Diabetes.

Why just kids?

Some of our community members have asked why the focus is just on kids with Type 1 diabetes, and not all adults with Type 1 diabetes or insulin-dependent diabetes. But it needs to be a staggered approach so that it’s easier for the National Department of Health to say yes. If we ask for everyone, they can (rightly) say they can’t afford it.

Internationally, CGM access has begun with children with Type 1 diabetes, then adults with Type 1 diabetes, then insulin-dependent people with Type 2 diabetes and finally all those with Type 2 diabetes.
