In 2021, the Diabetes Alliance created South Africa’s first Diabetes Charter. It was prepared after a consultative and collaborative process with volunteer workstreams – each of which included numerous people living with diabetes (PLWD).
While this Diabetes Charter recognises the cluster of conditions such as obesity, diabetes, cardiovascular diseases and other comorbidities, the Diabetes Alliance focuses on the challenges and proposed solutions for diabetes in South Africa, as that is our collective area of expertise.
Why a Diabetes Charter?
We believe a South African Diabetes Charter is necessary to unite the disparate voices working with diabetes in South Africa, to start a discussion about the best ways to solve the most obvious challenges, and to point towards the development of an effective diabetes response.
The World Health Organization (WHO) launched the Global Diabetes Compact1 in 2021 with the vision of:
“reducing the risk of diabetes, and ensuring that all people who are diagnosed with diabetes
have access to equitable, comprehensive, affordable and quality treatment and care”.
In alignment with the World Health Organisation
The World Health Assembly (WHA) Resolution WHA74.42 urges Member States to “raise the priority given to the prevention, diagnosis and control of diabetes as well as prevention and management of risk factors such as obesity”. It is within this context that the Diabetes Charter was developed.
