Diabetes 101 in Athlone

On Saturday I was lucky enough to go to the Diabetes 101 meeting in Athlone, run by the Athlone Pharmacy. What a wonderful day! There was a fantastic turn-out, some really great talks and a lot of smiling faces.

They set up a programme for the day that included a cardiologist speaking about diabetes and the heart, a few minutes for me to speak about Sweet Life and my diabetes diagnosis, a hilarious interlude by diabetic comedian and radio DJ Trevor Davids and some necessary information about the National Diabetes Month walk coming up on Saturday.

They also had a blood sugar testing station set up, courtesy of Roche, and their in-house dietician answered questions from the community as everyone made their way to their seats. There were snacks and drinks for after the meeting, and everyone was really excited to be there.

The group had Sweet Life magazines for everyone to read, and it was such a pleasure for me to see people reading the latest magazine!

What makes Diabetes 101 so amazing – apart from the fact that they’ve only been going a year but have such a strong following already – is that the whole organisation was started by Abdullah Khan and the team at Athlone Pharmacy because they saw a need in their community. Isn’t that what we should all be doing?
