Itching Eyes Related to Diabetes?

Hi,

Could you help with some information please?

I’m a Type 1 diabetic and my eyes are always itchy and red, and it’s like the veins in my eyelids always throb… Is this normal?

Thanks,

Ash

    Hi Ash,
Itchy and red eyes, as well as swollen eye lids are all signs of a possible ocular allergic reaction.
Diabetics have an increased risk for dry eyes. The tear film serves as a barrier to allergens (substance that causes an allergic reaction) and also dilutes them. If eyes are dry, more allergens reach the eye.
Consult with your optometrist or ophthalmologist to have your condition assessed and to get the correct treatment. There are a lot of different treatments on the market, ranging from vitamin supplements, lubrication and steroid eye drops. They will be able to assess your needs and give you advice regarding this.
